Zambezi Working Donkey Project June Update

Our partner group, Zambezi Working Donkey Project (ZWDP), were super busy in June.

At their Maramba Farm rescue centre, they cared for five donkeys in need of rest and recuperation, including:

* Zebra and Jali, who were well enough to be returned to their owners following two months of care with ZWDP. The team were satisfied the owners will treat them well following education on equine husbandry.

* Jeer, who has badly cracked hooves and is partially blind.

* Jack, who is a burns victim but is recovering well.

* Missy, a young donkey who came in with her mother. Her mother was also a burns victim and sadly died.

Jack and Missy are being held with ZWDP until the culprits for their abuse are found and brought to justice.

ZWDP also took in another two donkeys who require veterinary treatment. One of the donkeys has a huge tumour on her shoulder that needs removing. The other donkey is a yearling with juvenile warts all over her muzzle. These are caused by a virus and will eventually go away. However, they are hindering her breathing, so ZWDP are trying to limit the spread of the warts.

Out in the field, the ZWDP team undertook visits to nine villages, treating 307 donkeys for fleas/ticks, wounds and worms. They also rescued four donkeys who require ongoing treatment and monitoring.

At their workshop in town, ZWDP distributed 12 sets of new humane harnesses and repaired an additional 40.

All in all, ZWDP had a productive month, which is only made possible thanks to the generosity of AAA's supporters!
