MARES Assist Seven Donkey Axed in Zimbabwe

Matabeleland Animal Rescue & Equine Sanctuary (MARES), AAA’s partner group in Zimbabwe, recently undertook an emergency rescue in Dete. They responded following a horrific incident, where an axe-wielding man injured 7 donkeys.

When MARES arrived at the scene, 2 donkeys had already died. They attempted to save another donkey, but his injuries were too significant. Veterinarian, Dr. Muvona, managed to treat another 3 donkeys who had been axed but only sustained superficial wounds.

The seventh donkey had been axed on her leg and had a fractured thigh bone. MARES took her to their sanctuary for treatment and rehabilitation. The owner of this donkey surrendered her to the sanctuary, knowing she will never be able to work again. She has been named Heather.

These photos show how much Heather has improved since the incident. She is able to put weight on her injured leg again, thanks to MARES' incredible care.

Police arrested the man responsible for this dreadful cruelty and MARES are currently awaiting a court date for sentencing.
