Caring for India's Working Equines
During the first quarter of 2022, many working equines in India have been provided with veterinary care through the AAA-funded Equine Program, run by our partner group, Help in Suffering (HIS). The team assisted equines with conditions as varied as skin infection, leg wounds, a vaginal tumour and hoof laminitis.
One case involved a mare with a skin infection on her leg, whereas another mare had sustained a wound on her hind limb. Both mares were successfully treated by the HIS vet team.
Surgery was provided for a horse with a vaginal tumour. She made a full recovery following surgical removal of the tumour, making her owner very happy.
At HIS’s Camel Rescue Centre (CRC) in Bassi, the team saw 10 donkeys, 1 stallion and 1 mule over the past 3 months. The mule arrived at the CRC limping and the vet team diagnosed him with hoof laminitis. After 4 days of treatment, the mule could walk again without limping.
HIS also saw a mare with a right metacarpal wound. Following cleaning of the wound and antibiotics, the mare fully recovered. All the equines seen at CRC were also dewormed.
Along with the patients seen at the CRC, three equines were also brought to HIS’s mobile vet clinic for health check-ups and deworming.
AAA are proud to support the work of HIS, who are providing vital veterinary care and treatment for India’s working equines.
