Animal Nepal - August Update
AAA, with the help of our generous donors, provides financial support in the running and maintenance of the Animal Nepal Sanctuary for rescued equines in Nepal.
During August, we were very excited to welcome Apache’s baby and she gave birth on the 29th of August but sadly the foal passed away the next day as he was very weak and would not latch on for nursing. While we are very saddened by this loss, we are happy to see Apache recovering well from the birth. As she is producing a lot of milk, in order to prevent Mastitis our caretaker is routinely milking her and keeping her udder clean. On the 4th of September, our five rescued animals were moved to our sanctuary in Dukuchhap after spending close to 5 months in quarantine. All 5 are in very good health and have adjusted well to our sanctuary. They are being kept separately from the other animals for now, especially our larger mules and horses, who can show some aggression to new animals. Our three donkeys Sameer, Sangeet and Bruna, however have been very welcoming, especially Sangeet has been very excited as he is now the only male in a herd of 6 donkeys!
This month, we also moved six of our dogs into the sanctuary, where we have made a separate area for them close to Kumari’s shelter. After a few days, the dogs have settled in very well and seem to enjoy their new home.
We really couldn't have done this without the support of AAA.
A short update on the Nepalgunj case: upon examination by our Vets, it was discovered that the death of the cattle was caused by massive parasitic load and ingestion of toxic substances like plastic, which is a common cause of death among street cattle. A large number of the cattle were also found to have worm infestations, for which they are now receiving treatment. In the group of animals rounded up and taken to the Municipality's shelter, there were 19 horses and mules too, and we have moved them to our shelter and they are being treated and taken care of by our Nepalgunj team.
We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to AAA who have been particularly supportive in these past few months since we got our new rescues. From providing financial support to medical advice in handling glanders and dental management in equines, we have really appreciated AAA’s help.
