Horse Shoe Project in the Gili Islands, Indonesia

Animal Aid Abroad’s donors help support initiatives like this Horse Shoe Project in Gili Islands, Indonesia.  The project began with a visit from Kyal Grant from Grant Forge and Farriery, and Dr Jen Lugton from Balanced Veterinary Services in February. The project was relocated to Stud Rescue with a view to training locals on better hoof trimming techniques and shoe application.

Over the course of the 6 days, several locals came to the clinic, many on a daily basis to receive further training and practice.  During those days, at least 12 locals got taught the basics of trimming and shaping hooves.  Two of these locals have now been set up with tools and equipment and have a steady stream of customers making use of their skills and knowledge.

It is hoped that with better farrier tools, they will be able to work more efficiently, and that as a result, more horse cart drivers will want the higher quality shoes.

The money from selling the shoes is being recorded and will go towards the next order of shoes and equipment.

Hopefully, another visit from international farriers can be arranged after the high season and more equipment will be sourced to be able to train more people at one time.
