Friendicoes March Report 2023

Animal Aid Abroad partner group, Friendicoes have sent us a report on the March activity for their Equine Program.

As always colic was common, but with the unusual heat and early water scarcity in the area, there was a notable increase in the number of colic cases. Colic involves dehydration, impaction and poor gut motility and is treated with pain killers, fluid therapy and laxatives, along with plenty of water.

Other cases seen during the month were a severe lacerated wound on the thigh area due to a road accident with a truck, another lacerated wound, this time on the face as a suspected result of the mouthpiece being too tight, yet another severe lacerated wound, this one on the hind leg from the animal getting its leg stuck in between an iron rod. Sharp fencing wire injuries and babesiosis were also treated during the clinics.

There was also a focus on deworming, and keen distribution. Keen distribution is one of the most important preventative measures for saving working equines from saddle sores and back injuries. The team are very proud of the fact that equines along their route who have received keens, no longer suffer from these types of injuries.

During March, the team also rescued an abandoned donkey foal who had a fracture and malunion of bones and as a result was left to fend for itself. The foal was brought to the shelter and has quickly become a favourite with visitors.
