Help in Suffering (HIS) India - March 2023 Report

Donations to Animal Aid Abroad help support groups such as Help in Suffering (HIS), who have sent us a report on their equine program from January to March 2023. The most common cases seen during this time period were colic, rectal prolapse caused by worms and dehydration, vaginal tumour, abscess, lameness, and pregnancy. All cases were also given hood treatment, deworming tablets and a tetanus injection.

One of the sanctuary residents, rescued mare Basanti, was abandoned at the animal hospital six years ago due to multiple sarcoids (skin cancer). The HIS team surgically removed the tumours with multiple surgeries and multiple rounds of chemotherapy. Sadly the tumours kept returning and resisted further treatments. As a consequence, Basanti was humanely euthanised in the compound in January. We thank the HIS team for doing everything they could this poor animal, and giving Basanti and caring, safe and loving home for the last years of life.

Another mare was brought to CRC hospital on the 22nd of March by his owner Ramphul from a nearby village Mohan Pura. After examination, Dr Jitendra and team found some symptoms in mare, such as Pyrexia, Anorexia, Weight loss, Dark urine (Black water disease) and dry fecal. It is clear that he was suffering from "Babesiosis" according to the symptoms. Treatment was started with antibiotics, multivitamin and anti protozoal drugs. The mare was brought regularly to the hospital for 3-4 days for the treatment and the results were seen and the mare was fully recovered from the disease. The owner was extremely happy with the treatment and Dr Jitendra explained to the owner to look after his health and take a better care of the mare.

Currently in the sanctuary, there are 7 donkeys, 1 stallion and 1 mule.
