Meru Animal Welfare Organisation (MAWO) February 2023 Report

Meru Animal Welfare Organization (MAWO) is a non-government and non-profit organization which was has a mission of improving animal welfare by bringing awareness to the community and treatment of animals to ensure that they are in good health.

The organization carries out mobile outreach clinic for treatment of diseases, disorder and injuries to animals especially dogs, cats and donkeys so as to improve their health because the community does not pay much attention to them as they do to other livestock.

MAWO has joined hands with Animal Aid Abroad (AAA) to carry out activities to make sure that animal welfare is observed and ensured that animals are taken as living beings and the community to be fully aware about the correct welfare practices.

DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT

1. Donkey clinic

a) Deworming - On 10th of February 2023 we carried out donkey clinic at Ngarenanyuki village. A total of 27 donkeys were dewormed by using 1% Ivermectin to control both endoparisite and ectoparasite and multivitamin as a vitamin in order to improve their health during this period of drought season.

b) Wound management - 4 donkeys has wound and most of the wound was due to poor cart, halter these happen after using a narrow rope and others was due to poor harnessing. Therefore these wounds were cleaned with iodine, treated with pen strep (antibiotics), meloxicom (pain relief) and topical antibiotic wound spray.

PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

DELIVERING OF HARNESSING - MAWO we still distribute harnessing to Ngarenanyuki Village while we insisnt on make it and use while they carry different loads from one place to another and others they understand and starting using harnessing.

DELIVERING OF THE DOUGHNUTS - Also we continue with distribution of the doughnuts to the farmers while we educate them on how to make it and use when they are using cart in order to avoid getting the wound to the donkey, through that way we improve the welfare of the animals.

PROBLEM FACED DURING CLINICS

• Every time we go to the clinic we see the changes to the farmers who have already meet with us and we educate them about the welfare of the animals but also we meet with many other farmers with the same challenges where we need also to educate them also. So there is still much work to be done to get the whole community educated.

RECOMMENDATION

Most of the wounds that we see in Ngarenanyuki was caused by the improper cart where they use cart without putting doughnuts around the neck and thus why it caused wound because of the friction between neck and the cart. Therefore due to these condition our recommendation is to carry out more mobile clinics, but in addition to this, we continue with the animal welfare teaching, while teaching on how to make doughnuts that helps to avoid wound, which we believe it will help the health of the animals to change and increase humanity in animal welfare.

CONCLUSION

The community which received donation extend their gratitude and appreciate the service to their donkeys. MAWO is also giving thanks with a lot of grateful to work with AAA in improving and raising awareness of animal welfare through education and practical training to the community. We look forward for more collaboration and more work so as to save lives of many more animals.
