Friendicoes December 2022 Report

AAA partner group Friendicoes in India found that during December 2022, Colic was once again the most common issue that they were coming across in their outreach program.

Lacerated wounds from sharp fencing wire also featured highly in the cases they treated. For one such horse suffering from this type of wound, it was unlikely that he would be given any rest to recover, as it was wedding season, and being a white horse, he would be in high demand to work. The Friendicoes team do their best to try and educate the community about why things like this are cruel and inhumane.

Dental rasping was another treatment given to a number of animals. In one case where this was neglected, the animal was unable to chew properly, dropping food from it’s mouth and bit it’s cheek causing a deep laceration. Again, being a wedding horse, the team warned the owner to give this horse the rest it needed.

Dog bite wounds were another issue that was seen. Attacks by stray dogs are increasing in rural areas particularly on calves, foals, donkeys and even full-grown ponies.

The team also saved an abandoned pony from Ghaziabad, left behind because of old age and arthritis. The pony was brought back to the shelter to live out it’s days in comfort and safety.

In addition to the above, Friendicoes also distributed 600 blankets to working animals to help them withstand winter weather.
