Friendicoes Equine Program - November 2022

In November 2022, the Friendicoes team were swamped with colic cases, treating more then three or four cases per day. Colic involves the animal suffering from dehydration, impaction and poor gut motility, requiring pain killers, laxatives and fluid therapy.

Other cases dealt with during November included a wound on the flank region as well as another equine with a laceration on the thigh, both caused by road accidents, an injury caused by a rod piercing the brisket area, and wounds caused by sharp fencing wire. The team also conducted dental rasping for many horses, and also carried out a number of rescues.

The first rescue was an abandoned donkey left on a highway with a severe hip wound. The second rescue was of four horses from a riding club. Riding clubs are unregistered and often have extreme cases of cruelty and neglect. These four horses - Speed, Fireball, Pinky and Nigerita - were all suffering from joint problems and arthritis.

Many thanks to the Friendicoes team and the paravets for keeping up their hard work in helping these animals in need.
