Animal Nepal Dukuchhap Animal Sanctuary July 2022 Report

The team at the Animal Nepal Dukuchhap Animal Sanctuary have sent us their July 2022 Report:

One of our miniature donkeys Kush, is not doing so well at the moment. He had been inactive and not eating well. After carrying out a blood profile, the result was abnormal so a blood smear was prepared which showed the presence of the blood protozoan disease Plasmodium Vivax which causes Malaria. This is usually caused by a mosquito bite. It’s difficult to say when exactly he was infected because the incubation period can be quite long. He is currently under treatment.

In July, we also updated the health and welfare records of all our sanctuary animals. Blood profile was carried out for all our animals. Both our bulls Kumu and Prawin are healthy and their blood works have come back normal, they are at a healthy weight, eating well and active. Of the equines, Novy was found positive for Ehrlichiosis. Markhu and Paulie were found positive for Anaplasmosis. Despite the presence of blood protozoans all three look healthy and are showing normal behaviour. They remain under close observation and their treatments have begun. We will repeat the tests again in a couple of weeks. The results of the rest of our donkeys, mules and horses have come back normal and all are doing well.

We have experienced extremely heavy rainfall this month, which is quite normal for this time of the year. Owing to that, the animals don’t get to spend as much time outdoors as they would have liked.

We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Animal Aid Abroad for their continued financial support in the running and maintenance of the sanctuary for our rescued equines in Dukuchhap.
