Animal Nepal February 2022 Report

Animal Nepal Dukuchhap donkey sanctuary monthly report

February 2022

This month we welcomed our new batch of veterinary interns to out Dukuchhap Animal Sanctuary, where they get to learn about equine health, welfare and management. The interns are final year veterinary students and carry out 15 days internship at our Dukuchhap sanctuary and the remaining 15 days is spent at our dog treatment center, where they learn about companion animals. Our internship program has been running for many years and in fact few of our previous interns have joined us as vets now.

At the time of writing this report, we are deeply saddened to report that we lost our dear Chandani on the 10th of March. She was our youngest donkey, the daughter of Puffin whom we lost on the 6th of December. Chandani was born at our Godavari sanctuary in 2014 and she was only 8 years old. She had not been displaying any outwardly signs of illness, had been eating well and had not given us any cause for concern for her health. Due to the unexpected nature of her passing, we carried out a post mortem by sending samples to an external lab, for which we have now received the results. According to the post mortem report, Chandani died from suspected Hepatic Encephalopathy which is a liver disease. Given that Chandani was a fairly young donkey with no previous history of health issues, this certainly came as a shock to us. We are now reviewing the diet of all our equines, carrying out blood profile tests of all equines as well as doing a soil and water test of our sanctuary. We will keep you posted about the results and of any changes that we will need to make following the findings. Ironically, out of all our equines, Chandani was the one who seemed to really love liver tonic and would always as for more. Chandani was a very sweet natured donkey and she spent her whole life with us, she will be dearly missed.

We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Animal Aid Abroad for their continued financial support in the running and maintenance of the sanctuary for our rescued equines in Dukuchhap.
