Vet Team Reach Hundreds of Camels in Thar Desert

Our fantastic partner group, Help in Suffering, organised a free camel treatment camp in February in Jaisalmer. The camp team consisted of two vets and four vet assistants.

Jaisalmer is situated in famous Thar Desert. The main attraction for tourists here are camel rides. However, because the area is so remote, camels do not usually receive any veterinary care. Their owners also cannot afford treatment for their animals.

On the day of the camp, owners gathered early with their camels.

The vet team saw camels with many ailments, including:

  • Lameness,

  • Mange,

  • Diarrhoea,

  • Colic,

  • Impaction,

  • Trypanosomiasis,

  • Urinary and respiratory problems,

  • Various wounds.

The team also attended to a couple of emergency cases and undertook surgery for two camels.

Overall, the camp was very successful, with 342 camels treated for different illnesses or injuries. The team dewormed 160 animals and distributed 300 plastic nose pegs as well.

Other achievements included handing out 400 educational leaflets on proper camel care and welfare, and holding two community training sessions.

Help in Suffering have expressed their gratitude to AAA’s donors and supporters for allowing them to run this yearly camp for working camels in Jaisalmer.
