Improving Working Animals' Lives in Kurdistan

Animal Aid Abroad are the sole supporter of the wonderful Dr Sulaiman of the Kurdistan Organization of Animal Rights Protection. He works tirelessly to provide veterinary care for thousands of animals throughout the Duhok province of Kurdistan, with a particular focus on animal owners who have low incomes. Funding from Animal Aid Abroad assists Dr Sulaiman to purchase medicines, minerals, vitamins, disinfectants, deworming medication and equipment to treat working animals as required.

During September, Dr Sulaiman treated 30 donkeys, 5 horses, 3 mares, 1 mule, more than 1100 sheep, goats and cattle, 42 shepherd dogs and 50 poultry in 7 districts and 13 villages. Conditions seen and treated in animals included worms, wounds, weakness, mange, diarrhoea, eye infections, limb fractures, bacterial or viral diseases and external parasites such as ticks and fleas. The shepherd dogs often require treatment for wounds due to fighting with other dogs or wolves. Prophylactic (preventative) treatments including vaccinations are often also given to animals and, additionally, Dr Sulaiman feeds stray donkeys as he goes about his day.

In order to assist Dr Sulaiman to complete his rounds more easily and efficiently, Animal Aid Abroad have sponsored a clinic ute for him to use. This allows Dr Sulaiman to reach and monitor the status of more working animals in remote villages and to transport all of the veterinary equipment and medicines he requires. We are proud to support Dr Sulaiman’s critical work improving working animal welfare in Kurdistan.
