Animal Nepal Dukuchhap Animal Sanctuary Oct Update - Flood Recovery, Sonu's Healing and Diwali

The Animal Nepal Dukuchhap Animal Sanctuary is pleased to share the latest news and updates on their ongoing efforts to care for and protect the animals who call the sanctuary home.

Through every challenge, the sanctuary remains a place of safety and healing for rescued working animals, thanks to the dedication of the team and the donations of our kind-hearted supporters.

Here is an update on recent happenings and the well-being of their beloved residents!

Nepal experienced one of its heaviest and most unseasonal rainfalls, resulting in catastrophic floods and landslides across the country. Unfortunately, the fencing around the sanctuary was also severely impacted. Fortunately, all the animals and staff were unharmed, which was a huge relief. The team is now in the process of collecting funds to help rebuild the fences and hopes to begin the work by the 4th of November.

This month, one of the donkeys, Sonu, became quite ill and is displaying symptoms consistent with Babesia, a tick-borne disease. Although initial blood tests came back negative, all of her symptoms point to the illness, so she is currently receiving treatment based on her condition.

The veterinary team plans to repeat her bloodwork later this week. While Sonu is unable to stand, she has been eating well and is showing signs of responding to the treatment, which is encouraging. However, they are also closely monitoring her daughter, Monu.

From experience with donkeys, the team has observed that when something happens to a close partner or parent, the other often becomes unwell too. Extra care is being taken to ensure Monu remains healthy during this time.

The rest of the animals are in good health, and the team is now looking forward to the Diwali festival next week, during which various animals, such as dogs, crows, cows, and bulls, are worshipped and celebrated. A special ceremony is being planned at the sanctuary on the 2nd of November as part of the festivities.

The team extends their sincere thanks to all supporters for their ongoing financial contributions, which make it possible to care for and maintain a safe home for rescued animals in Dukuchhap. Your generosity ensures the animals receive love, care and protection every day.
