LAZAWO June Update - Supportive Community Comes Together for Animal Outreach

Lazawo team Dr Zacharia, Dr Yusuph, Dr Sr Rosamystica, and translator Samson travelled to the village of Masinono in Musoma July 5th and 6th.

They met with newly hired veterinarian assistant Stevin Mollel. July 5 th in the morning the Lazawo team met with Musoma animal welfare officers and government officials to explain the work they will be performing in the Musoma district. Dr Sr Rosamystica accompanied the team as a government representative for the Lake Zone District.

They were warmly welcomed to the area. The rest of Friday and all of Saturday was spent educating locals on donkey care, treating donkey wounds and seeing to other medical needs, and vaccinating. Over the course of 2 days, 223 donkeys were seen and treated by Lazawo vets. 60 owners were educated during group education.

Medical conditions encountered by our vets included: worms infestation, wounds, colic, and tryanasomiasis.

Treatments included: deworming, anthelmintics, tick/mite baths, and diminazine. Challenges faced is that while we have been given the Veterinary Centre at Masinono by the government, it unfortunately does not have diagnostic gears like microscope, slides and reagents for quick diagnostic. Many villagers are wanting treatment beyond what we can provide in the village.

39 donkeys were treated for wounds. All donkeys were dewormed and given antibiotics, as needed. Tetanus vaccines are currently unavailable in Tanzania. We will continue checking to see when they become available for purchase. Rabies vaccines were purchased and will be given at the next clinic.

50 more donkeys have been seen in the week following clinic. Of these donkeys, 21 have had wounds needing treating. All donkeys seen by Steven receive deworming medications, antibiotics if needed, and an overall health check. Owners are educated on proper harnessing, wound care, and overall care of the donkey.

With the support of our generous donors, the LAZAWO team will continue to provide exceptional care and medical treatments, easing the pain and suffering of these incredible animals. Thank you for helping make this possible—together, we’re making a difference! 🐴❤️
