ZWDP Update: Making a Difference for Donkeys and Communities in June

Our amazing project partner, Zambezi Working Donkey Project, ZWDP continued to make a positive impact for working donkeys and their communities in Zambia throughout June.

They helped 67 villagers in the Livingstone District, providing care to an incredible 187 working donkeys. Each animal received essential treatment to protect them from parasites, with extra attention given to the 158 donkeys who were dewormed.

They also helped 7 donkeys recover from painful wounds caused by outdated harnesses, which they replaced 11 of these with more comfortable and humane ones.

These wounds on donkeys in Zambia are a constant reminder of the challenges they face. Thankfully, with our supporters help, the dedicated  ZWDP vets are working to alleviate their pain and provide critical treatment and care.

Memory makes a miraculous recovery at the sanctuary!

MONTHLY RESCUE

A NEW BEGINNING FOR MEMORY

“Those who love animals are the best people in the world.”

-Emanuel Kant

A sweet girl named Memory, the team's newest rescue, arrived at the sanctuary on 12th June in a critical condition. She had suffered severe injuries to her right front leg and lower jaw, caused by a sharp object, confirmed by glass fragments found in the wounds, inflicted by a person. The police have been informed and are investigating the incident.

Despite the extent of the wound, the veterinary team was relieved to find that no major blood vessels, nerves, or muscles were affected. Memory was sadly found with signs of neglect such as weakness, dehydration, and she was unable to eat. She underwent immediate treatment with fluids, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory medication. We’re delighted to report that she is now safe, enjoying fresh grass, gaining weight and thriving in her new loving home.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

The incredible ZWDP mobile clinics treated a total of 210 animals, with a focus on preventing and treating common ailments like parasites, wounds and eye infections.

They provided essential medications like antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and deworming treatments. In addition, they distributed 2100 flea and tick treatments to help protect working animals.

They were also helped 7 donkeys recover from painful wounds caused by outdated harnesses, which they replaced 11 of these with more comfortable and humane ones.

A large ZWDP clinic took place in Nyika Yesu, a village in the north. The event highlighted the project's positive impact on the local community and its working donkeys. Owners gathered with their donkeys and carts.

Despite the challenges of the drought, the donkeys appeared healthy and content, demonstrating the effectiveness of the clinic’s care and advice. Villagers expressed their appreciation for ZWDP's work and eagerly anticipated their next visit - a brighter future for donkeys!

DONKEY RESCUE, REHABILITATION AND RECOVERY

In June, the ZWDP team cared for 21 donkeys and two playful foals at ZWDP 's Sanctuary farm. The furry friends enjoyed plenty of pampering, including refreshing dips and hoof trims.

Sitolo, rescued in April with her foal, has recovered well and was permanently rescued last month due to an unidentified long-term ailment. Mother and foal are always by each other's side, eating, playing and enjoying their life together. 💞

Chief - A remarkable comeback!

When Chief arrived at the sanctuary in March, his hoof was a heartbreaking sight. A cruel wire had been tightly bound around his fetlock, causing such severe damage that we feared the worst. Our hearts sank as the team considered the possibility of saying goodbye to this gentle soul.

Chief underwent a delicate operation. Slowly but surely, a new hoof began to grow! It was a miracle to see as nature worked its magic, healing this brave donkey.

Hoof deformation prevents his return to work, so he’ll continue to receive wound treatment and hoof padding to keep him comfy.

Black, Set, and Jackson also underwent wound treatment with positive results! With persistent care and love they receive from vets they’re cheerful as ever despite their injuries. Signs are looking up for these three charming donkeys!

All these stories of recovery demonstrate the resilience of these amazing animals. Their courageous spirit fills us with joy and witnessing the ZWDP team's compassionate care for these animals is truly heartwarming and a privilege to share.

Thank you to the ZWDP team for their compassion!

As the drought worsens, the rescue donkeys and foals are facing increasing hardship. Providing them with enough hay and nutritious food is becoming a daily challenge for the ZWDP team. With your generous support, we can ensure these gentle animals have enough nourishment they need for the dry season.

A monthly pledge helps them continue their incredible work rescuing and caring for donkeys in need. Donations start from $5! Make a donation here. 🐴💗
