Animal Nepal, Nepal Sanctuary Rescue Program, February update
First, a heartfelt message from one of our partners that you so kindly support, Animal Nepal. “We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Animal Aid Abroad for their continued financial support in the running and maintenance of the sanctuary for our rescued equines in Dukuchhap.”
During February, the team at Animal Nepal sadly had to say goodbye to their Jackie, a mule that they rescued from a brick kiln in Lalitpur about five years ago.
In positive news, the sanctuary appreciated the uplifting energy received from many young visitors and had some brushes installed around the sanctuary that the animals can scratch themselves with.
Here is the team at Animal Nepal with their updates from February:
Jackie had been with us for almost 5 years. He had been experiencing a significantly bad old fracture on his front leg but was still being put to work. Due to the fracture being very old, we couldn’t organise any corrective surgeries to the leg. However, Jackie made a remarkable recovery during his time with us and his quality of life was not affected by the injury.
Jackie was always a very sweet and gentle mule who got along particularly well with our donkeys and horse Paulie. In his last few weeks, Jackie found it increasingly difficult to stand up and spent much of his time lying down in the sun. While it was very sad to have to lose Jackie, we are so happy that he got to spend the last 5 years of his life in comfort and safety.
We had many young visitors to the sanctuary this month who came by their parents. It was really nice to see young kids so comfortable around our animals and they had so many questions to ask about each one of them. Having kids visit our sanctuary is one of our favourite activities, as their excitement and enthusiasm also rubs off on us and makes the day even more fun.
This month, we also had students visit from the Kathmandu University School of Arts & Design as part of their final year project for which some of them are designing campaigns related to animal welfare.
This is another encouraging sign and we love to see the growing interest of the younger generation in animal welfare issues.
In February, we also installed some brushes around our sanctuary where the animals can scratch themselves. We waited to see who would be the first one to figure it out and it was our dear Kumu. We couldn’t be prouder of him!
Thank you so much once again for your kind and amazing support, to ensure the Nepal Animal’s sanctuary can continue to run and be a safe haven for rescued equines in Dukuchhap.
