Tanzania Humane Charity February 2024 Report

With your support, during February 2024, the Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) team rescued a neglected donkey with severe gangrene on the right tarsal part of the leg with ischemic and necrotic tissue. It was circumferential around the digit and identifiable by black tissue and sloughing of natural tissue planes. The donkey was roaming around the market with severe pain and limping in the right hind leg. Upon examination there was rope tied at the area of the affected tissue.

The TAHUCHA team conducted a thorough clinical examination and diagnosed that the cause of gangrene was the tight rope below the hock joint that prevent flow of blood to the tarsal part of the leg.

The team acted quickly by rescuing it via the vet ambulance and hospitalizing it at the sanctuary, where the donkey was administered Painkiller (Meloxicam), broad spectrum antibiotic (Gentamycin) to prevent secondary bacterial infection and then dewormed.

The next day, early in the morning the donkey was sedated so as to clean, dress and apply antiseptic at the gangrene wound and finally the wound was dressed with a bandage.

The donkey will be permanently rehabilitated at the sanctuary since there is no owner. This innocent donkey will be at the sanctuary for the rest of their life but more examination is still under going to check if there is infection in the bone (osteomyelitis). A sample has been collected and sent at SUA laboratory for further culture and histopathology so as to get a tentative diagnosis and prompt intervention in the hopes to save life of the donkey.

More updates will be given about the condition of donkey, at the moment the donkey is doing fine.

The TAHUCHA team extends it’s sincere appreciation to ANIMAL AID ABRAOD for their heartfelt support for the sake of donkey health improvement in the BUKOMBE district.
