Gili Island farrier program hits a milestone
Our generous donors contribute to programs all over the world including Indonesia where AAA is providing funding for a farrier program in the Gili Islands, helping the working ponies there.
Following is a report on this successful program which is making a huge difference.
Huge advances have been made in the last week for the working ponies on Gili Trawangan. The project team worked together with Janur Indah Koporasi and Stud Horse Riding and Rescue to improve the farriery standards and hoof care of the ponies.
Janur Indah provided several keen and talented students who embarked on a week of learning and hard work. While they already had a basic idea of trimming, they certainly lacked the tools to be able to get the job done efficiently. In the last week, they upskilled sufficiently to be able to give a decent and balanced hoof trim before nailing on good quality shoes.
There were 6 students in total who received training, and over 20 horses shod. Janur Indah were then left with a complete set of tools and a stock of imported horse shoes and nails so that they can continue to offer quality farriery services.
This is just the beginning. The goal is to have a full time farrier station set up at Janur Indah so that all horses can receive this service, and the better quality shoes and nails are more readily available at an affordable rate.
A huge thanks to Kyal Grant of Grant Forge and Farriery, Mitch Hamilton of Hamilton Horse shoeing and Reginal Wenham for giving up their time and expertise to train the local team on Gili Trawangan. Dr Charles El-Hage, Christopher Beggs and Dr Jen Lugton for their endless support and efforts to get the project to this point.
This is a huge milestone for everyone involved and we are very proud to be part of this project.
