Zambezi Working Donkey Project November 2023

The Zambezi Working Donkey Project (ZWDP) are instrumental in help improve the lives and working conditions of working donkeys in their area, with the help from AAA donors.

During September the ZWDP team treated 204 donkeys through mobile clinics, in addition to the 14 permanent residents at Maramba Farm. 186 donkeys were dipped, 124 dewormed and 15 donkeys were treated for wounds.

On the 1st of November we conducted a full mobile clinic in a new area called Wiketo, which is approximately hours’ drive from Livingstone. This community had requested us to come out there for a while and we were happy that we could finally make it. Upon arrival, we already found a few owners and donkeys waiting for us which is great sign. Throughout the day we treated just over 40 donkeys and gave out 7 new pairs of humane harnesses. There were a few more owners that requested harnesses so we took their details and will go back to make sure all yokes are replaced. It was great to see that ZWDP has spread and that even communities further away from Livingstone are requested our support.

Besides the 7 harnesses we handed out during the mobile clinic, we gave out 4 more new pairs of humane harnesses. These harnesses were collected at our workshop at Maramba Farm, most of these harnesses will be used by farmers that want to plough they’re in preparation for the rains to come.

One of our recent rescues unfortunately had a miscarriage (very early stages). We were glad it happened during the stay at our rehabilitation centre as we could keep a close eye on her. She recovered well and will stay with us for another few weeks to get strong and healthy again.

Besides our work in the field, we have been busy at the farm as well. As Livingstone has reached its peak temperature, it’s key to provide share for our donkeys during the day. We have moved one of our permanent grazing areas into a more shaded area with some nice fresh grass to eat.
