An update on the BlindLove donkey outreach

As our donors and supporters would be aware, BlindLove in South Africa have been working hard on organising their veterinary outreach project for working donkeys in their area. They have now held this outreach and have sent us a report on how it went.

Our recent Veterinary Outreach was a fantastic day. Wow!!! The vets, equine dentist Donovan who is one of the best in the country (as well as an excellent farrier) all worked extremely hard!!!

We had hay and carrots for the donkeys, handed out small food hampers and sweets to the owners and kids, as well as small bags of dog food.

Every single donkey had its teeth and hooves done, dewormed, treated for ticks and external parasites, then all wounds were treated.

Sadly Malibongwe, didn’t manage to complete the harnesses so we’ve brought them home to finish sewing and will take back as soon as they are finished.

It was wonderful to have the kids there and showing so much enthusiasm.

It was 23 donkeys at the big Veterinary outreach on the 13th, all got the full treatment. Hooves, teeth, dewormed, external parasites, wounds treated. I think it’s a great place to have started. The team worked for 7 hours straight without a break!

Then on the 3rd there was the one stallion gelded, and then 6 more donkeys attended too. They had their hooves cleaned and trimmed, wounds treated and were dewormed.

Now that we’ve developed a good rapport with the owners they are going to help spread the word. We are planning another castration day next, one owner that attended the vet outreach said he has over 25 donkeys and lots of stallions!!! I think it’s going to grow very rapidly now. We are planning this for September which will be our Springtime.

Then the next big general Veterinary outreach in November.

In the meantime/ in between time (now that we’ve hopefully ironed out all the issues!!!) we will be sewing up harnesses in order to reach my original goal of 10 harnesses each month.
