Animal Nepal - May 2023 Report

Animal Aid Abroad is able to continue the support of Animal Nepal and their Dukuchhap Animal Sanctuary, with the generous support from our donors. Animal Nepal have sent a report on their May 2023 activity:

Fly bites in the summer months are a constant source of nuisance for our animals, especially our donkeys. Due to their shorter tails, they are not able to prevent fly bites as effectively as animals with longer and bushier tails. The fly bites can cause painful rashes on the legs as well as blood protozoan diseases which can prove fatal if left untreated. So this month, our donkeys got their own custom made stockings to prevent fly bites. We thought they might tear it off but surprisingly all three have taken very well to their stockings and the best part is that it has helped to keep the flies at bay!

This month, our new rescue cow Kaali has also moved into the sanctuary after passing all her health checks. We weren’t sure how Kumu and Sanu might react to her but for the most part they ignore her and she ignores them but they do sleep in the same shed at night. There is currently a viral bovine disease going around in Nepal which has claimed the lives of many cattle. It’s called Lumpy skin disease which affects cattle. It is transmitted by blood feeding insects such as certain species of flies, mosquitoes and ticks. It causes fever, painful nodules on the skin and can also lead to death especially in animals that have not been previously exposed to this disease. As a preventative measure we have now vaccinated our Kumu, Sanu and Kaali.

We are now very much looking forward to welcoming our six new rescues to our sanctuary once they complete their 21 day quarantine. They are all doing well and seem to appreciate not having to work and getting to eat nice food. Randeep’s leg is an old fracture so there is not much we can do aside from supportive treatment for any pain or discomfort he may experience. He seems ok for now. The animals have all had their fecal and blood samples tested. The fecal samples showed that all six animals had internal parasites and we have started treatment for that. We are waiting for their blood report. Once they all receive the all clear, we are aiming to move them to the sanctuary on the 11th of June.

We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Animal Aid Abroad for their continued financial support in the running and maintenance of the sanctuary for our rescued equines in Dukuchhap.
