Zambezi working Donkey Project March 2023 Report

One of the partner groups that Animal Aid Abroad and our donors supports, the Zambezi Working Donkey Project, have sent us an update on their March 2023 activity:

During March our team treated 120 donkeys through mobile clinics, in addition to our 16 permanent residents at Maramba Farm. Treatments includes dipping, de-worming and wound care.

In March, we fixed 20 harnesses and have given out 2 new harnesses. On the 10th of March, we conducted a clinic at Libuyu market, we were lucky to be accompanied by Bouvy (a local vet originally from the Netherlands) and one of her student vets. From the 24 donkeys we’ve seen, 7 needed wound treatment so it was great to have Bouvy there with us. We also came across 2 yoke’s, our Project Supervisor explained the use of humane harnesses and made an appointment with these owners to come to the farm and collect one. Unfortunately, we had to confiscate one small donkey as well, the poor little boy didn’t even have a name and was found full of ticks and way too skinny. Upon talking to the owner, we came up with the name Rain. We took Rain home to Maramba farm after tick treatment and he immediately started grazing away. He was put in one of our empty paddocks for a few days so our team could keep a close eye on him. After 2 weeks the improvement is amazing, Rain is eating very well and looks like a much stronger donkey already. He will stay at the farm for maybe another month until he is fully strengthened before going back to his owner.

Our Project Supervisor had to make 1 emergency call out in March, to a village called Katubia where a donkey has a prolapse – we will be collecting him this week and bringing him the farm for treatment.

It is thanks to the supporters of AAA that we were able to help these donkeys and we will continue fighting their cause wherever we can!
