Meru Animal Welfare Organisation (MAWO) January 2023 Report
The Meru Animal Welfare Organisation (MAWO) have sent us their donkey clinic report for January 2023.
After arriving in a local village around 9:30 and arranging with the ward executive, we build up our tent and the water troughs on the sides of the market.
People were amazed and curious the same time about what might be going on. The team got into conversation with several donkey owners and the clinic started.
Meanwhile we tried to reach out to the ward veterinarian who agreed to cooperate with us while we introduced our clinic to the village on 05.11.2023. Unfortunately he was occupied with other duties this day.
The majority of injuries we saw were taking place at the donkeys neck, caused by carrying the yoke.
Approximately 16 donkeys had been treated this day.
Even though we talked to more owners, resulting out of a lack of knowledge some have many reasons why their donkey shouldn’t be treated. Some men feared that if the donkey gets treated by injection maybe he will not be able to make the way back home with the market goods. Women who wish to let their donkey be treated need to get agreement from their absent husband first. Others are asking to get paid if they let their donkey be treated.
The realisation came that it takes a lot of patience to reach out to people who probably don’t even have anyone who cares for them and now they themselves should care for an animal more than for themselves.
All in all it was a good day for the donkeys as well as for the community.
Thank you to the MAWO team for making a difference in the donkeys and the communities lives.
