TAHUCHA November 2023 Report

The Tanzanian Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) is one of the partner groups with AAA donors helps support.

During November 2023, the TAHUCHA vet team treated a suffering donkey with a deep necrotic wound at the neck caused by continuously pulling a load on cart with oxy yoke. The wound was getting worse as time goes on.

The TAHUCHA team met with a cart carrying a load of logs from the forest being pulled by four donkeys, and one of the donkeys had intense pain and debris of necrotic material on the yoke. The team requested the driver to rest all of the donkeys, then a tentative examination was done and it was found that the donkey had a deep penetrating and painful wound on its neck.

The team advised the donkey rider to take off the injured donkey from the yoke, and intervention was immediately initiated by administering anti-inflammatory medication (meloxicam), cleaning of wounds to remove necrotic materials by using hydrogen peroxide, and finally, the wound was dressed and antibiotics (pen strep) administered to prevent secondary bacterial infections.

The donkey is now resting with the village officer and restricted not to work for almost 6 months under follow up and agreement between the owner and village officer who trains the community about animal welfare and rights.

The TAHUCHA team will continue with interventions until the full recovery of the donkey, at the moment the wound of the donkey is recovering well.

The TAHUCHA team, owner and village officer had extended their heartfelt appreciation and acknowledgement to ANIMAL AID ABROAD for their kind and endless support at Bukombe district for the sake of improvement of donkeys’ welfare and health.
