Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) July Case Study

During July 2022, the Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) team received a call from a councilor of Isemabuna ward, 132.8 km from the BUKOMBE SANCTUARY claiming that one donkey had dystocia (difficult foaling) for almost two days. The team responded quickly to attend the Jenny so as to save the life since the foal was unfortunately already deceased.

The TAHUCHA team did a thorough clinical examination and revealed that the foal had transverse presentation thus normal foaling was impossible.

TAHUCHA vet Dr BULUBA decided to perform a caesarean section in order to save life of the Jenny. General anesthesia was administered  and  the surgical team managed to remove foal  through an abdominal incision and the operation was successful. However the TAHUCHA team were so sad to have lost the foal.

After suturing the surgical wound the Jenny was administered pain killers and antibiotics to prevent secondary bacterial infections for three days consecutively, and prior to the operation a shot of tetanus vaccine was administered.

The Jenny was also prescribed to rest for several months, isolating from other donkeys and the owner instructed to provide smooth porridge and water for three days.

Tahucha team made a follow up for 21 days until full recovery and at the moment the Jenny is healthy and fine.

Tahucha extends its sincere appreciation to ANIMAL AID ABROAD for their keen help for working donkeys in the Bukombe district and nearby areas.
