Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) May 2022 Report
Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) Case Study for May 2022
During May 2022, the TAHUCHA team received an emergency call from a donkey owner whose concern was that his donkey had a red mass hanging around the hind quarter and that the donkey was dull.
The team attended the donkey and after close examination, the team diagnosed the donkey with a rectal prolapse that they suspected to be caused by either diarrhea or a heavy worm infestation.
The donkey was treated by administering regional analgesia (lidocaine), cleaning the protruded rectum with clean water, topical application of anti-oedema, and finally the rectal mucosa was positioned in its normal anatomical region and purse string suture pattern was applied to prevent recurrence of the prolapse .Also pain killers were administered and the donkey was prescribed rest until it makes a full recovery .
After two days post reposition of the rectum the donkey developed severe colic due to gas accumulation, so the TAHUCHA team quickly removed the gases by using nasogastric tube, also Epsom salt was given via the tube and painkiller administered, and after half an hour the donkey was relieved. The donkey is now fully recovered.
Thank you ANIMAL AID ABROAD for your endless help to innocent and voiceless working donkeys in the Bukombe district.
