Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) January 2022 Report

In early January 2022, The Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) team received a call from a community member owning eight donkeys. His concern was that one of his donkey had been lame for about seven days .

The TAHUCHA team arrived at his household and a thorough clinical examination was conducted on the reported donkey. Upon examination, the donkey was diagnosed with lameness associated with inflammation and pus formation in the left hind leg, on the metatarsal areas and pus from the hoof.

The team treated the donkey by giving painkillers to relieve pain, and then the donkey was referred to BUKOMBE donkey sanctuary for further diagnosis in order to identify the cause of lameness and pus formation from the hoof.

At the sanctuary hospital the donkey was given general anesthesia and surgery was performed that revealed a 4 inch nail on the metatarsal region. The nail was removed surgically, incision sutured and wound dressed .the donkey was rested, watered and fed at the sanctuary and isolated in a special patient room.

The prognosis of donkey is good and the owner agreed to leave his donkey permanently at the sanctuary.

TAHUCHA extends its sincere thanks to ANIMAL AID ABROAD for helping to save these innocent working animals in the Bukombe district.
