Tanzania Humane Charity November 2022 Report

In November 2022 the Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) team attended a male donkey with severe mid shaft open oblique fracture of metatarsal due to a car accident along the highway.

According to the history from the donkey rider, four donkeys were pulling a cart, and suddenly a car driving with high speed hit the donkey on the lateral side at the hind leg. After standing the donkey was limping with excessive bleeding and exposed bone of mid shaft of metatarsal.

The donkey rider provided first aid to control the bleeding, while seeking veterinary intervention.

The TAHUCHA team rescued the patient by taking him to a safe place and initiated treatment by giving painkillers, controlling the bleeding, reduction of complete fracture, and casting of the fracture with plaster of paris and fixing splint.

The patient was provided with water, feed and full rest until recovery, with regular veterinary follow up.

The prognosis is excellent and promising and it is TAHUCHA’s hope that the donkey will recover and rest forever from work at the Bukombe donkey sanctuary, although the donkey is still currently with the owner because of their remoteness which made it impossible to transport by our ambulance to the sanctuary at this time.

TAHUCHA extends its sincere appreciation to ANIMAL AID ABROAD for their keen help to improve donkey welfare in the north east of Tanzania.
