Friendicoes Seca Equine Program October 2022

AAA partner group Friendicoes have updated us on their October activity with their equine program.

Frequently encountered health problems included:

Colic, which involves dehydration, impaction and poor gut motility. This is always a common issue seen by the team and often in conjunction with other health issues. It is thought that the spiralling costs of fodder is a contributing factor in the prevalence of this issue.

Head injury and hind leg injury caused by road accidents. All to often animals are working, or wandering abandoned in among traffic, and unfortunately collisions happen.

Nose bridge injury due to a metallic sheet, carelessly placed by the owner, causing a laceration on the horse’s nose.

Maggot wound on perineal area which went unnoticed by the owner and deteriorated to becoming infested. The owner was advised to focus on grooming and proper care of their animal.

Babesiosis presenting with coffee coloured urine, off food, patechiae on third eyelid and high temperature. While a common ailment, the team have not seen too many cases this year.

Lacerated wound on hind leg caused by a kick from another horse.

All animals were treated in the field and will be monitored by the fantastic Friendicoes paravets.

This month the team also rescued a donkey in Gurgaon who had been abandoned and was suffering with a fractured foreleg. He was treated and brought to the sanctuary where he can rest and recover.
