Kurdistan Organization of Animal Rights Protection (KOARP) - August activity

Dr Sulaiman at the Kurdistan Organisation of Animal Rights Protection (KOARP) has had a busy August. Following are two cases which he attended:

“The first case was of a local shepherd dog from Nergzlia village in the Mosul province, who was affected by a malignant tumor and had been suffering for a long time. After we were informed, we went to the village and we conducted the difficult operation to remove all the dead tissue of the tumor. Although the dog lost a lot of blood, the operation was successful. After much treatment and monitoring, the dog is now in good health.

The second case is of the first donkey castration done successfully with the acceptance of the owners. Currently, many donkey owners in the region castrated their donkeys in the local traditional cultural way using rope and wire. In many cases, this dangerous practice caused wounds which became infected, causing sickness and even death. KOARP has been on a mission to educate the community against this practice, and to accept the help from trained veterinarians. They managed to get acceptance from one owner to allow KOARP to conduct the operation in a proper surgical manner and as a result, the donkey is now in good health and recovering well. This news will hopefully create a revolution among farmers to seek help to surgically castrate their animals and stop using the traditional way.
