Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) - August Case Study 1

On the 6th of August 2021, the TAHUCHA team received an emergency call from Mr. Warioba, a donkey owner from Namba Moja village, approximately 17.8 km from the TAHUCHA sanctuary.

His donkeys were pulling a cart on a steep slope when one of the donkeys hitched to the yoke jumped and cut off the rope, meaning just one donkey remained on the cart, causing an accident which injured the donkey’s right hind leg at the pastern joint with the heavy wood carried on the cart.

Mr. Warioba was scared for his injured donkey and immediately reported the accident to the TAHUCHA team. The team went straight away to the accident location and immediately released the donkey from the yoke.

After being freed, the TAHUCHA team examined the donkey and diagnosed that the donkey had a closed fracture on the pastern. Painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication were given immediately to the donkey, and the fracture was immobilised by using Plaster of Paris.

The donkey owner was advised to give his donkey plenty of rest, exercise, feed and water, until a full recovery is made, under vet intervention and instructions. The prognosis for the donkey is promising and it is expected that it will make a full recovery within a few weeks.
