Friendicoes Equine Program - July Activity report

The Friendicoes team have had their work cut out for them recently with the general condition of the animals they treat being worse than usual. Many animals suffering from colic, severe dehydration, emaciation and weakness. This is due in part to the extremely hot temperatures that are being experienced throughout the region.

Owners are encouraged to give their animals enough rest and plenty of fresh water, but when times are tough for people, the animals are often the first ones to feel the effects. While most animals suffering and in distress with colic were treated with pain killers and fluid therapy, some animals were neglected and emaciated enough to warrant the team attempting to rescue the animal away from their owners.

Aside from these issues, the team also dealt with fencing wire wounds, neglected and infected wounds, teeth rasping, hoof problems and deworming.

There was an abandoned donkey rescued and now living at the sanctuary, as well as a feeding program which saw over 160 working animals provided with food.
