Friendicoes Equine Program - June Activity report
June was a busy month for the Friendicoes team. Some of the ailments treated included colic and dehydration due to the extremely hot weather and insufficient water supply to the animals, sharp fencing wire wounds, infected wounds, and road accidents. One horse used for marriages and joy rides was suffering from a severely infected wound, which was simply being covered by a cloth while the horse was forced to continue working.
One malnourished pony was rescued from the roadside in Noida, while a young mule was rescued from the site of a road accident in which it’s mother had sadly been killed. A donkey was also rescued after being hit with a train and losing it’s hoof in the accident.
The team also delivered much-needed feed to working animals at Okhla and Turkman Garth stands, feeding over 165 equines through out the month.
Last month there was the story of a horse who had a sizeable chunk taken out of the back it’s neck. The images were disturbing, but the healing process is almost complete. Despite the owner refusing to surrender the animal, the horse has not been worked, but well cared for and it is well on the road to recovery.
