Clinics and education continues in Liberia despite Covid-19
The Liberia Animal Welfare & Conservation Society in Guinea have updated us on their June activities:
"Guinea has recorded over 5,600+ confirmed COVID-19 cases with 34 deaths as of June 30, 2020. The outbreak of the virus has devastated every sector of the country including the promotion of the health and welfare of working animals. Working animals, especially donkeys continue to work under challenging conditions with more pain and suffering. The outbreak of the virus is not stopping us from addressing the critical needs of working animals in the country. We continue to ensure that working animals receive all the best care and treatments and their owners are educated about the health and welfare needs of the animals. The services continue to make animal owners value the contributions of their animals and show them more love, care and protection.
Agricultural activities are seasonal in Guinea and June is the main start period of farming activities. The use of donkeys and cattle for farming started to intensify in June so our team visited 24 communities and farms and ensured that the owners of the working animals and the children are educated about the welfare and health of the animals. In the month of June, 86 working cattle and 230 donkeys (316 animals) were treated and 253 adults and children were inspired with various messages on the welfare and health of their animals. The population continues to appreciate this lifesaving initiative that is saving their animals and making them happy and healthy especially during these critical times of global health pandemic.
