AWPO educating in Uganda
The Animal Welfare and Protection Organization (AWPO) in Uganda have had a productive few months.
From September to November, the team have treated 313 donkeys and educated 102 owners on the humane treatment of their working animals. They also speak on local FM radio to educate the community at large.
Issues that the group see in their area include poor harnessing, ear twitching as a traditional restraint method, clinical signs of exhaustion due to overworking, outright cruelty and abuse causing distress in the animals, poor hygiene and sanitation in donkey pens, and the need for supplements to maintain the general health of the animal population.
AWPO are collecting data on the effects that their activities are having, and it is hoped that with the continuation of their fantastic efforts, that long-term sustainable change will be seen.
