Harnessing an issue in Meru
The Meru Animal Welfare Organization (MAWO) have been kept busy with their mobile clinic to Samria village during November. 35 donkeys were de-wormed, 10 wounds from poor harnessing and fellow donkey bites were treated, 5 donkeys with overgrown hooves were given a trim, while there were also some cases of mange and canine distemper seen.
The take away from their visit to this area is that more education is needed around correct harnessing. The wounds encountered were deep and severe due to the use of oxen yokes and carts which are too big for donkeys and the results speak for themselves. MAWO aim to conduct training in proper harness making so that these painful wounds are not seen time and time again.
