Nowzad Aug Update - First Aid Kits and Relief for Kabul's Malnourished and Ailing Working Animals

As the season shifts and autumn descends upon Kabul, the NOWZAD team reflects on the events of August and the ongoing efforts to support working animals in the region.

This past month saw the treatment of 53 donkeys and 117 horses under the Working Animal Program, with data detailing the care provided. Some of the horses required hospitalisation due to various ailments at the NOWZAD facility.

Summary of the amazing work for equines:

  • Deworming: 47

  • Hoof Trimming: 18

  • Harness Provided: 11

  • Wounds Treated:

    • Harness Wounds: 0

    • Other Wounds: 18

  • Other Illnesses Diagnosed:

A range of conditions including malnutrition, respiratory problems, joint issues, weakness, gastrointestinal (GI) problems and anemia.

In a significant achievement, the team distributed an additional 31 first aid kits this August, along with providing essential basic wound training to animal owners. This initiative aims to empower local caretakers with the knowledge and tools necessary to manage their animals' health effectively.

Unfortunately, the summer months brought about a concerning rise in respiratory issues among the equine population. The NOWZAD veterinarians have been working diligently to treat affected groups with antibiotics, as many horses are suffering from strangles, a highly contagious bacterial infection of the upper respiratory tract or the equine influenza virus.

Additionally, the team has observed a troubling number of equines presenting with severe malnourishment as the summer draws to a close. Some of these animals required hospitalisation to ensure they receive the proper treatment needed for recovery.

In total, 39 equines received vaccinations against rabies, and 40 against tetanus, highlighting the ongoing commitment to preventive care.

The NOWZAD team remains committed to improving the welfare of working animals in Afghanistan, providing necessary medical care, resources, and education to help ensure a healthier future for these invaluable companions.

Thank you to our supporters for your help in our mission to assist and care for working animals.
