Blind Love Cart Horse July Update - 75 Horses Treated and Farrier Joins To Give Monthly Care!

With our supporters' help, the month of July was filled with compassion, dedication, and positive change for working cart horses.

Your contributions enable the Blind Love team to care for animals, providing them with the medicine, treatment and support for their working life and beyond.

A record 75 horses attended the outreaches and received care!

The team in Thaba’Nchu, who organise these outreaches, went above and beyond, even taking to the streets on foot to treat any horses they encountered.

This month, numerous saddle sores were identified and treated. The owners often report that their horses are stolen at night or over weekends, ridden harshly for long distances, and returned in poor condition. Similar complaints have been received from donkey owners in Grahamstown.

One unfortunate horse suffered from an old eye injury caused by someone throwing a stone at it. The vet has recommended that the eye be removed.

During the outreaches, hooves were checked and cleaned.

The team is excited to announce a gentleman in his mid-50s living in Thaba’Nchu, who is a trained farrier, will now be holding farrier outreaches for the team once a month. This is an incredible development and addition to the care and support for the cart horses!

Winter has settled in the Free State, with temperatures dropping to -13°C. Grazing is scarce, and the horses are looking woolly and a bit thin under their thick winter coats. On the plus side, the team has observed far fewer ticks and flies during these colder months.

Horses in need of deworming received treatment. Harnesses and tack were inspected and adjusted where possible and the team continues to distribute humane harnesses to those in need. When donations of bits are available, they replace the harsh, often old and rusty bits.

The Agripreneur team continues to engage with the owners at each outreach, discussing the welfare and healthcare of their horses and advising on daily practices to improve the lives of their animals.

Together with Blind Love, we are incredibly thankful for our supporters' donations, which makes it possible for programs and outreach to improve the lives of these animals. Your generosity truly makes a difference.

Every donation, no matter the size, directly impacts the wellbeing of the horses, easing their suffering and helping them live healthier, more comfortable lives despite the challenges they face as working animals.
