Equine Clinic and Para-vet Program, Friendicoes in India -March update

Thank you so much for making a difference  to the horses rescued and cared for by the Friendicoes Equine Clinic and Paravet Program in India.

Please find a summary of the treatments you have made possible for these horses.

Horse with colic

This horse was frequent lying down and getting up, unable to defecate and urinate. It also experienced impaction, poor gut motility.

Treatment: Pain killer and fluid therapy given. Laxative given via stomach tube

Neck wound

This horse suffered an accident with an iron rod while on the road, resulting in a deep penetrating wound on neck.

Treatment: Wound cleaned with antiseptic and dressed. Antibiotics, pain killer and tetanus vaccine given.

Eye injury

Lacerated wound near eye due to a road accident. The eye has been spared any direct hit.

Treatment: Wound cleaned with antiseptics and dressed. Antibiotics, pain killer and tetanus vaccine given.

The horse owner lives in an open tent. hence our field para-vet will keep an eye on the daily dressings of the horse.

Bite wound

Bitten by another horse in play or aggression, resulting in lacerated wound. Carelessness of owner played a part.

Treatment: Wound cleaned with antiseptics and dressed. Antibiotics, pain killer and tetanus vaccine given. Daily dressings by field para-vet.

The animal is to be rested because of the large amount of skin lost, hence flies and maggots are a possibility.

Hematoma

Fluctuating, painful swelling on thigh area. This could have been caused by injury or by the owner hitting it while on the road.

Treatment: Fluid drained. Pain killer and tetanus vaccine given.

Warning has been given to the owner. Otherwise well cared for and being pure white probably earns well for owner for marriage ceremonies. Has improved with rest.

De-worming and vaccination

Brick kiln season has started.

Animal deworming and vaccinations has also started.

These animals are coming from various villages with the owners and will be at the kilns till the rains begin and put an end to the brick making season.

Rescued pony 1

Pony rescued from Turkman gate and brought to Gurgaon shelter. Owner is impoverished and unable to care for his elderly animal.

Now rescued and taken to the sanctuary. It is now safe and will be with us till the end of its life.

Rescue Pony 2

Pony rescued from Tilak bridge railway station and was in shock and in an extremely dehydrated condition.

It was rescued and brought to Gurgaon Sanctuary, with chances of survival negligible.

It drank water, ate some fresh grass, but it succumbed to its prolonged trauma, then lay back and passed away. We are happy at the end it knew some one cared and at least it didn’t pass away dreaming of food.
