Rescued Bulls, Horses and Buffaloes Flourishing at Indian Shelter

The Visakha Society for Protection and Care of Animals (VSPCA) in India have been progressing and growing in a way that has been transformative for the animals at their shelters.

With your kind donations, they have made tremendous strides over the past few months by continuously improving care for the rescued animals and thus helping them recover.  This is especially true for their 52 rescued bulls, who are thriving due to tailored feeding.

At their shelter in Marikavalasa, eight buffaloes and one horse continue to flourish in their serene environment. They have made impressive physical and emotional recoveries from their previous ordeals.

At VSPCA’s shelter in Koravada, Kindness Farm, 24 buffaloes and three horses are thriving among the green pastures. Fifty-two rescued bulls are progressing beautifully thanks to specialised nutrition.

Your donations have provided the bulls with extra, nutritious feed. This special diet has helped them to gain strength and improve their health after being saved from harsh conditions.

All the animals receive a carefully-balanced diet designed to meet their unique needs, as follows:

Buffaloes: Hay, grass, special feed, veggies, and fruits,

Horses: Hay, horse feed, gram, wheat powder, veggies, and fruits,

Bulls: Special feed, hay, grass, veggies, and fruits.

Health Check-ups and Ongoing Care

All the animals receive monthly vet visits, ensuring their vaccinations and parasite control are up to date. The bulls, in particular, are given extra care to ensure their full recovery.

Community Engagement

The team are continuing to educate the public about the humane treatment of working animals. This program consists of community and on-site educational sessions, plus sharing the bulls’ recovery stories to inspire compassion.

Special Rescue of an Injured Cow

Recently, VSPCA had the heartbreaking yet powerful opportunity to rescue a cow who was suffering from a painful hip injury. Although cows typically have owners, no one came forward to claim her. Without their intervention, this poor cow—considered “unproductive”—would have been sold to butchers, her life reduced to nothing more than a transaction. Thankfully, VSPCA acted quickly, bringing her to their shelter just in time. She was given immediate care and is now slowly healing.

This special rescue is a reminder of the incredible impact of our partner groups’ work. This lucky cow is no longer another forgotten animal; she is a living, breathing reminder that every life is worth saving. Her journey to recovery is not just about physical healing - it’s about restoring her dignity and showing that compassion is stronger than cruelty.

VSPCA have certainly made incredible progress over the last quarter. The recovery of their animals—especially the 52 rescued bulls—serves as a powerful testament to the compassion that drives their mission.

Thanks to your unwavering support, these animals have been given a second chance at life. Every rescue and act of kindness helps VSPCA grow stronger in their commitment to providing exceptional care and advocating for the humane treatment of all animals.

Together, we are not just making a difference; we are changing lives and building a future where compassion leads the way.
