Working Equines in Afghanistan Receive Humane Harnesses, Blankets and Essential Care
Without your support and generosity, AAA would not be able to fund the fantastic programs being run by our dedicated, hard-working partner groups. Nowzad are one such group and they assist many working animals in Afghanistan. Please read on to see how your donations helped them achieve many admirable goals during February…
Firstly, the team distributed 15 protective blankets with humane harnesses for working donkeys.
Nowzad also undertook 15 mobile veterinary clinics in February, providing 82 working donkeys and horses with essential care. In addition, they dewormed 29 animals and vaccinated 16 equines for rabies and tetanus.
Some of the ailments they treated in working animals included:
· Limping
· Harness wounds
· Foot & Mouth Disease
· Malnourishment
· Colic
· Respiratory issues
· Diarrhoea
The team completed surgery in the field to castrate a horse and tend to wounds on two cows. Five working equines were also seen by the farrier to attend to hoof care.
Recently, Nowzad rescued a poor horse who was so weak due to severe malnourishment and an injured foot, he had completely collapsed and couldn’t stand back up.
His owner finally agreed for him to be hospitalised at Nowzad’s sanctuary. He is slowly recovering and the team are trying to negotiate with the owner to purchase this horse to save him from potentially being worked to death.
Sadly, Nowzad lost their other new rescue, Sunny, last month. Sunny was a little donkey who had been abandoned and was attacked by dogs. Her progress was going well for a couple of weeks, then she took a downward turn and wasn’t strong enough to fight an infection. Sunny’s loss has been devastating for staff members - especially considering the fight she put up to survive - but at least she knew comfort and peace during her final days.
Nowzad expressed their sincere thanks to AAA for offering to support Sunny long-term.
Thank you once again for your incredible support and for allowing us to fund these critical programs for working equines. Your compassionate donations are undoubtedly improving lives around the globe.
