Reaching Animals in Need in Kurdistan
Over the course of January, Dr Sulaiman of the Kurdistan Organization of Animal Rights Protection (KOARP) used his Animal Aid Abroad-funded car to visit working animals in various villages throughout the Duhok province. He monitors their health status and provides treatment, food and equipment as required, particularly for animals owned by low income families and refugees escaping conflict areas.
Last month, Dr Sulaiman managed to treat 20 donkeys, 3 stallions, 3 mares, 2 mules, 35 shepherd dogs, 200 poultry and more than 1242 sheep, goats and cattle. It is interesting to note KOARP is the only group AAA supports that assists working shepherd dogs.
Treatment was required for wounds, weakness, mange, diarrhoea, an eye infection, a fracture and external parasites. Dr Sulaiman was able to use AAA funds to purchase deworming medicine, disinfectant, equipment, minerals, vitamins and other medicines in order to carry out crucial de-worming and other prophylactic treatments for working animals. In addition to his veterinary work, Dr Sulaiman also fed stray donkeys in 8 districts and 11 villages.
In one case, a male horse was seen who was suffering from emaciation, weakness and restlessness. He had a large, chronic wound on his back but, following treatment, the wound is healing, he is more comfortable and his body condition is improving.
Thanks to our donors, AAA are able to continue on as Dr Sulaiman’s sole supporter and assist him with the ongoing work he is doing for vulnerable animals in Kurdistan.
