The Wonderful New Sanctuary Thanks to AAA Supporters

In a quiet corner of India, the Friendicoes Camel Sanctuary in Shaitrawa, Jodhpur, has undergone a remarkable transformation thanks to you, our Animal Aid Abroad supporters. With amazing determination, the Friendicoes built a brand-new sanctuary in just three short months.

Thank you to AAA supporters - your donations provide camels to live freely in the new sanctuary, surrounded by comfort and care. Every choice to help, every act of generosity, paves the way for a brighter future for these gentle giants. We are grateful you are a part of this journey, together, we’re paving the way for a better, kinder world - one step at a time.

The new sanctuary is now home to 14 camels, each of them finding safety within its shelter.

The sanctuary itself is thoughtfully designed to meet the camels’ every need:

  • A sturdy shelter offers protection and comfort.

  • Feed and water troughs ensure they’re always nourished.

  • A well-stocked medicine supply is ready if injuries or illness occur.

In nearby villages, another 50 camels rely on the team for treatment and care. When they’re injured or sick, they’re brought to the sanctuary or treated where they are. Altogether, 64 camels now benefit from the work of this incredible team.

The struggles working camels face in nearby village

In the village, camels are used to transport water from the pond to homes. Camels also play a role in tourism, often providing transportation via camel carts.

Many of the camels suffer from a range of painful conditions. Thankfully, with our supporters help, the Friendicoes team are there to offer relief and veterinary care.

  • Mange, a persistent issue, leaves camels restless and itchy, their skin raw and covered in scabs. Medicated baths and ivermectin injections help bring them relief.

  • Hump sores, caused by improper padding, create deep wounds on their backs. Regular cleaning and dressing are critical for healing.

  • Eye injuries, often from harnesses, require delicate care, including ointments to soothe and heal.

  • Foot injuries and lameness, caused by overwork and hard surfaces, are treated with antiseptics, bandages, and pain relief.

  • Nose ring (nakel) injuries, sometimes severe enough to attract maggots, are carefully cleaned and treated to prevent further suffering.

  • Other conditions like mouth ulcerations, udder abscesses, and fencing wounds are treated with tenderness, ensuring each camel feels comforted and cared for.

The team works daily, healing injuries and bringing comfort to all the animals. In the face of adversity, the sanctuary has stood strong, proving that with love and determination, anything is possible.

Thank you to our amazing supporters. Every camel helped, every wound tended and every life made better is possible because of the incredible support from people like you.

You are creating a world where animals are treated with respect and love, even in the face of great challenges. While negativity may sometimes overshadow progress, your actions remind us that compassion makes a difference.
