Donkeys Play Essential Role in Fight Against Covid-19

During these challenging and unprecedented times, some of our partner groups have drawn attention to the fact that donkeys are currently playing a critical role in stopping the spread of coronavirus. In rural communities within developing countries, donkeys have become even more important than usual as they haul water over long distances. Daily access to clean water has allowed these communities of people to wash their hands frequently and prioritise hygiene.

In Tanzania, our partner group Meru Animal Welfare Organization (MAWO) have highlighted how donkeys are assisting people in remote communities to stay safe. By transporting water, donkeys are enabling good hand hygiene and thus preventing the transmission of coronavirus. MAWO are continuing to provide veterinary treatments to ensure working donkeys remain healthy, as well as educating owners on proper care and humane treatment of these animals to enhance their welfare.

These essential programs being conducted by many of our partner groups overseas are keeping both working donkeys and entire villages safe and healthy during the global pandemic. In this time of crisis, families are truly dependent on these hard-working animal allies for obtaining clean water, making respect for and protection of donkeys more important than ever.
