Remembering Soni
We, alongside Animal Nepal, would like to thank our supporters as their kindness and generosity make it possible to rescue donkeys from lives of hardship and provide them with a sanctuary where they can live out their days in peace and happiness. After years of carrying heavy loads, these gentle souls deserve nothing less than a life filled with care, comfort, and dignity.
This past month has been one of reflection and remembrance as the sanctuary said goodbye to the beloved Soni. While her journey has come to an end, her story continues to inspire a steadfast commitment to providing care, compassion and dignity to every animal at the sanctuary.
Remembering Soni
Soni, a brave donkey, passed away this month. Despite her remarkable strength and will to recover, her body could not overcome the challenges brought by Babesia and prolonged immobility. Throughout her time at the sanctuary, she received the best care possible, including targeted treatments, acupuncture therapy, and gentle support using a pulley system to help her stand.

Soni arrived at the sanctuary in May 2023 after being rescued from a brick kiln in Bhaktapur, where she and her baby, Moni, were forced to carry heavy loads of bricks. Witnessing such a young donkey—and a nursing mother—endure such grueling conditions, which violate the Working Animal Welfare Directive, 2017, was both shocking and heart-wrenching. When she was rescued, Soni bore painful cuts on her back from poor-quality harnesses and saddles, yet she retained her gentle nature.

At the sanctuary, Soni was able to leave her hardships behind. She cherished her time with Moni and her best friend Raamri, another donkey rescued alongside her. The three were inseparable, often playing and relaxing together in the paddock. While she was shy around larger animals, Soni found solace in the quieter corners of the sanctuary, always keeping Moni close by.
Soni being her happy and sweet self at the sanctuary
Although there was great hope for her future, Soni’s health struggles ultimately proved insurmountable. Even in her passing, there is comfort in knowing her final months were spent in a place where she was safe, loved, and cared for. Her story is a powerful reminder of why the sanctuary’s work is so vital. Soni deserved far better than the life she was forced to endure at the kiln, and her caretakers are proud to have given her the chance to experience kindness and comfort. Her sweet, gentle presence will be deeply missed.
Rest easy, Soni - you were so loved, and your memory will be carried forward always.
Looking ahead, the sanctuary is preparing for the challenges of the winter months, which can be particularly tough for residents with joint issues exacerbated by the cold. With continued support, efforts are focused on ensuring every animal has warm shelters, ample food, and any necessary medical attention. Additional feed supplements are being prepared to maintain the strength and health of all animals through the winter.
The sanctuary extends heartfelt thanks to AAA supporters. Soni’s journey, and the care she received, would not have been possible without your kindness and generosity. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference, allowing the sanctuary to care for animals with the love and respect they deserve.
As the year comes to a close, there is immense gratitude for the animals in care and the incredible community that supports them. Together, a sanctuary is being built where every life is valued, and every story matters. Thank you for being a part of this journey.
