Meru Animal Welfare Organisation (MAWO) March 2023 Report

Animal Aid Abroad supported partner group, Meru Animal Welfare Organisation (MAWO) have sent us a report on their March activity.

Meru Animal Welfare Organization (MAWO) is a non-government and non-profit organization which was has a mission of improving animal welfare by bringing awareness to the community and treatment of animals to ensure that they are in good health.

On the 17th March, the MAWO team carried out a donkey clinic at Ngarenanyuki Village. A total of 21 donkeys were dewormed by using 1% Ivermectin to control both endoparisite and ectoparasite and multivitamin as a vitamin in order to improve their health during this period of drought season.

Four donkeys were found to have wounds and most of the wounds were due to poor cart halters or using a narrow rope and others were due to poor harnessing. These wounds were cleaned with iodine, treated with pen strep (antibiotics), meloxicom (pain relief) and topical antibiotic wound spray.

On this clinic the team was able to train 18 women from different areas at Ngarenanyuki village on how to make harnessing by using available materials in the community. They also provided training on how to use proper harnesses while carrying loads in order to avoid back wounds or other wounds that appear due to improper harnessing.

The team are starting to see improvement in the community due to past education and training sessions.

MAWO also had three students from the Tengeru Livestock College joining them for the mobile clinic and harness training for the month of March.
