Animal Nepal Report - October 2023
The generosity of AAA donors has help support Animal Nepal in their work for several years. Following is a report on their work for October 2023.
This month we discovered that our rescued cow Kaali suffers from seizures and she had two such episodes this month. This is deeply concerning for us as she is susceptible to injuries while she’s experiencing the seizure, especially in the night time when she is inside her shed. With this in mind, we have added extra hay in her bedding area so that it acts as a cushion even if she does fall. Kali is also being given medication to treat her symptoms and to minimize the occurrence of seizures. Aside from this, she is in good health and still has a healthy appetite and is not displaying any other worrying symptoms.
At the time of writing this report, we are in the middle of our annual Tihar holidays which is a 5 day long Hindu celebration. During Tihar, special consideration is also given to animals like dogs, crow, cows and bulls, whereby they are honored and worshipped. On the third day of Tihar, cows are worshipped as they are seen as a sacred animal that gives more than it takes. Cow is also the national animal of Nepal and have special status in Nepal’s constitution. Similarly, on the fourth day of Tihar, bulls are worshipped as a way of honoring them for their contribution to farming since ancient times. In line with this ancient custom, we also celebrated and honored Kali, Kumu and Pravin during this special time. The Nepali culture has always honored and respected the role of animals to human civilization and thus these animals are meant to be treated with compassion and dignity, but sadly, with increasing modernization, all these teachings have been lost with more emphasis now on the industrialization of animal agriculture which has led to large scale exploitation of these gentle animals. While we may not be able to help every single animal suffering at the hands of human, we are so very grateful to be able to provide a life of comfort and dignity for our sanctuary animals.
We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Animal Aid Abroad for their continued financial support in the running and maintenance of the sanctuary for our rescued equines in Dukuchhap. AAA have been particularly supportive in these past few months since we got our new rescues. From providing financial support to medical advice in handling glanders and dental management in equines, we have really appreciated AAA’s help.
