TAHUCHA August Case Study

In August 2022, the Tanzania Humane Charity (TAHUCHA) team attended a pregnant jenny as it was reported that she had been hit by an Ankole bull with sharp horns, on the abdomen while grazing and there is reddish material hanging.

TAHUCHA emergency teams attended the donkey grazing in a rice farm, and at a distance the donkey was restless with signs of pain and intestine hanging due to severe trauma that caused a rupture of the skin and peritoneum.

Thorough examination was conducted and revealed that the jenny was in the last trimester (13months).

The jenny was treated by administration of painkillers, general anaesthesia , cleaning of hanging intestines, repositioning of intestine into its normal position, suturing of ruptured peritoneum, muscles (oblique and  transverse ) and skin.

Antibiotics were administered to prevent secondary bacterial infections. Also, the jenny was prescribed to graze near home, not to mix with cattle, with plenty of rest and watering.

After two days the jenny gave birth to a male foal.

TAHUCHA and the donkey owner extended sincere appreciation to ANIMAL AID ABROAD for their endless help to working donkeys at Bukombe.

In another circumstance TAHUCHA teams conducted a thorough haemoparasites screening in donkeys at the sanctuary, blood samples were collected from 128 donkeys and the result was good however 6 donkeys were found with Babesia caballi, and immediately treatment started.

We would like to acknowledge ANIMAL AID ABROAD to help us fund a microscope for aiding in disease diagnosis.
